Recruitment from a candidate's perspective

This is a guest blog on my main blog from Amy Goldstein. Amy is the founder, principal contributor, and editor of Expat Essays. Originally from Ann Arbor, Michigan, Amy moved to Buenos Aires, Argentina in 2005, where she lived for over three years before moving to New Zealand in 2009. She hopes that readers, especially other expats, benefit from her notes, stories, advice, and experiences.I…See More

Father Xmas is a Girl ;-)

Here at Elfland we have been inundated with CVs for the Father Xmas role. In fact so many CVs that we have had to close our applications early. A copy of the ad can be seen hereA worrying factor was that over 40 of the responses to our Trade me advertisement were “serious” ones. However, the stand out winner by far was Allison Doody and I am repeating her job application in full. She wins the position on merit, sense…See More

Plus ca change, plus c’est la meme chose

There has been so much chatter and twitter about Social Networks replacing job boards, recruitment agencies dying out as technology takes over, and candidate care (or lack of it) that it has made me stop and think and, while thinking, that French phrase – in English “the more it changes, the more it’s the same thing” came to mind.30 years ago, I was a young London based accountant and applied to Michael Page (recruitment agency) for an auditing role they had advertised. The consultant saw…See More

Job Seekers have beating hearts

I was fortunate to attend a Recruitment Association lunch recently - not because the food was good and the orange juice and coffee flowed, but because the speaker was Nan Carroll, who has been part of the Recruitment Industry for many years, and who gave us food for thought. It was not one of those "Oh my goodness, I never knew that" revelation type presentations, but it reminded those attending of some fundamentals of growing and retaining good recruitment business. The title of her talk was "Is…See More

#atcsyd Day 2.. The Awesomeness Returned!

Man what a day.... sorry, it's late I'm writing this, but I just arrived at home. (took a few more days, went back to work, and now finished this)

But back to the start of my day...

Great start... woke up without the sound of crying (I have young children... this is a perfect start of a day!)

Then... awesome breakfast provided by the #atcsyd guys (the…

If you're reading this and you haven't been able to attend this weeks #atcsyd (the Australasian Talent Conference in Sydney this week) there's a couple of things I'd like to say.  Well, firstly, "sucks to be you" :), secondly, I apologies for the large input on my twitter feed and thirdly, better…

Career Planning…. New Years Resolutions

For those who read my blog, you'll know I've recently changed jobs, and I've been pretty slack in posting here in the last year.  Some will say "again?" others have been congratulatory, I have to say it has been an interesting experience.  I'm 37 years old and I'm into my 5th professional job (not counting the moss farming, kitchen hand and service station attendant during University and high school).  Being the new boy again, facing those nerves of the unknown, will they like me? will I…

TRU Australia - Idea generation on crack

I shared a taxi to the TRU venue, the Royal Melbourne Hotel, with the founder and conference dis-organiser of TRU, Bill…
