I have recently been hunting for a new job, with the aid of a few different recruitment companies. After getting a job offer and signing the contract I had the fun task of telling my helpful recruiters that I no longer needed their services. This was fine except for one who advised me:
You may have signed a contract, but you can't be forced to work there if you decide to pull out.
Why not go along and see MyClientsCompanyName anyway? You've got nothing to lose.
I can guarantee that their role / environment would be much better.
This was without telling the recruiter where I was moving on to, only that I no longer needed his help.
I felt that this was pretty cutthroat and was quite put-off by it, but maybe I was getting the wrong end of the stick.
What do you other recruiters think of this approach? Is it going too far?

For those who read my blog, you'll know I've recently changed jobs, and I've been pretty slack in posting here in the last year. Some will say "again?" others have been congratulatory, I have to say it has been an interesting experience. I'm 37 years old and I'm into my 5th professional job (not counting the moss farming, kitchen hand and service station attendant during University and high school). Being the new boy again, facing those nerves of the unknown, will they like me? will I…

I shared a taxi to the TRU venue, the Royal Melbourne Hotel, with the founder and conference dis-organiser of TRU, Bill…
