How do we control Facebook content about the workplace? Is it Private or Public?

We had a temp recently who was making negative comments about there current assignment on Facebook, one of our staff members was on there friends list was able to spot it and alerted management.

The Facebook update was placed in there own time and we had to request them to remove it. It raised the argument on how private / public is facebook? Should a FB / Twitter code of conduct be included in a temps contract? The Temp argues that it is a private network of friends, is it the same as speaking negatively at after work drinks and being overheard?

I believe that what happens and what is said in your personal time is up to you and should not be regulated. In saying this, I personally would not be so stupid to complain to anyone but my closest friends and in a private setting and the same goes on Facebook. Although it is a personal account, New Zealand has 2 degrees of separation and if you are going to grumble, be prepared for the consequences.

Aside from the repercussions, what kind of temp would be complaining about having work at the moment - if I was them i'd just be grateful for a job!
I agree with Simone - if it was regulated it would become something different to what it currently is and people would become very guarded in their use of it. But if you do post stuff on there i guess you need to be aware it's in the public forum.

But back to the start of my day...

Great start... woke up without the sound of crying (I have young children... this is a perfect start of a day!)

Then... awesome breakfast provided by the #atcsyd guys (the…

Career Planning…. New Years Resolutions

For those who read my blog, you'll know I've recently changed jobs, and I've been pretty slack in posting here in the last year.  Some will say "again?" others have been congratulatory, I have to say it has been an interesting experience.  I'm 37 years old and I'm into my 5th professional job (not counting the moss farming, kitchen hand and service station attendant during University and high school).  Being the new boy again, facing those nerves of the unknown, will they like me? will I…

TRU Australia - Idea generation on crack

Last Friday, after two days of excellent workshops and presentations at the Australasian Talent Conference's annual Social Media event, I attended the inaugural The Recruiting Unconference (TRU) Australia in Melbourne. I shared a taxi to the TRU venue, the Royal Melbourne Hotel, with the founder and conference dis-organiser of TRU, Bill…
